Warning for anyone unfamiliar with the canon, this contains Child and Spousal abuse.
Endeavor was within earshot when Shoto had boiling water poured on him, hearing his cries he rushed to protect his son, But all Shoto saw was Endeavor punching his mother so hard her nose broke and she died in hospital. Some stories say she died from bone fragments that entered her brain, others say that when she regained consciousness she threw herself down the hospital stairs out of guilt of what she had done to her son.
Once Shoto's wounds healed his elder brother ran away from home, taking Shoto with him. The brother tried to give Shoto a semi-normal life, they died their hair and got new names, Dabi and Sen, but Shoto looks and his quirk were just too recognizable, at eight his school realized who he really was and a police operation was set in place to take both runaway Todorokis into custody. It was a disaster and one undercover cop who was posing as "Sen's" teacher was killed in front of him.
After that Sen did not have a normal life, Dabi kept him away from other people and told him if he made any more friends like Mary-Sensei they would die like she did. Sen had no one but his brother and saw himself as a terrible burden to him.
One person Sen saw semi-regularly was Giran. Dabi would go to him, Sen following like a little shadow, to find abandoned places to help Sen learn how to control his quirk without being seen, places to hide him while Dabi did odd jobs for money and whatever else they needed, but one-day Giran showed up with an "apprentice" a green haired kid called Deku.
Sen didn't like how Deku would look at him, but that didn't stop Deku from trying to be his friend...
